Spring Break: Thailand Bitches

So this is a story about getting on a plane.

Once upon a time, Brenna and Kara are in Malaysian Music Class and everyone is crying because our assignment was to pick an emotional piece of music to talk about. But we are not crying, why? Not because we are not affected by Hoobastank (because that would be impossible), but because we are only a few sentimental songs away from the beginning of spring break.

This is Wednesday afternoon and our flight is leaving Thursday morning at 7AM.

So, if you recall, me and Kara had started to think that as a pair we were not good with transportation, but today was the exception

So we catch the bus at 5:30 to KL and get into the city at 6:30. Instead of waiting through the city traffic, we decide to do the Malaysian thing and just get off on the side of the street and not wait for the station. Turns out we got out right next to a subway stop only 1 stop away from Buikit Bintang! So we just got a train and by 7PM we are out and into the mall right by the station.

Actually by 7 we are already at the hair salon because Brenna needs to get some purple all up in her hair.

And we’re out of there at 8:30 with a fantastic purple color and feeling just slamming about our lives. We actually run into Sarah on the road towards the Pavillion (she had been looking for us) and that’s when we went to satisfy our taco craving.

And satisfy we did.

So after this, we take a short walk to meet the other 4 internationals who are going to Chiang Mai with us and get some hummus (another thing Hungry Marge was craving). So then Kara and Lenny actually decide to go to a freaking beach with the Saudis and I’m like “are you insane?” “You have a flight that leaves in the morning! It’s already 11PM!” So of course, I’m like no way am I going to a beach.

They leave and the 5 of us squeeze into one cab for the 40 minute ride to the airport. And I’m fretting a bit about Kara and Lenny, but also thinking “If they miss their flight, it’s their own damn fault”. So we end up at the airport at maybe 1 in the morning. And there’s no way that I’m going to sleep so I print my boarding pass and take up shop at a Old Town White Coffee for a few hours and try to keep everyone awake with jokes.

“What is red and bad for your teeth?”

“A brick”

And I am practically delusional as I am going through security, and at this point I haven’t heard from Lenny or Kara. It’s about 4:30AM, and of course I’m internally panicking, but on the outside I was cool as a cucumber.

Of course, I didn’t have to worry much longer because I get a call saying they are on their way. Then a few minutes later I get another call and learn that they went to the wrong airport. Of course. But I don’t think it’s that far away. The plane boards at 6:15 and Kara and Lenny get there about 5:45. I think that was cutting it close.

But the moral of the story is, All 7 of the Malaysian exchange students are on their way to Chiang Mai, Thailand.

And we get there about 9AM local time. We get some baht and make our way to our hostel. Which, of course, is a pain in the ass. The taxi cab driver doesn’t know where the address is, and I have to wifi and no means to look up a phone number. The funny thing was, Lenny just points to a spot on the map and asks to be dropped there, and lo and behold (after a bit of asking around) we learn it’s right around the freaking corner.

This place is adorable. It’s called Bunchan (definitely recommend when going to Chiang Mai). The place is on the east side of the city. The people who work there are amazing and we all got one room way up on the top floor with a veranda where you can sit and look over the city. Of course, our first task is get a bit of food. I had my first Pad Thai in Thailand. And then I passed the fuck out for the afternoon.

More tales of Chiang Mai to come, and yes I played with tigers and elephants. Spring Break!
